OK, so where do I start?

 

Let's get an idea that CAN be profitable online.

Creating a business on the internet, although different in some ways to conventional methods, is still based on fundamental marketing principles.  That means, you have to think like a business person about all the aspects of successful business management, especially the fundamentals such as planning and forecasting.  

Many offline, small business people fail to follow fundamental principles of supplying goods and services to a targeted marketplace and perhaps that's a contributing factor to the high percentage of failures, especially in the first 12 months of opening their doors.  I have met thousands of people now 'trying their hand' at marketing on the internet who have also failed to date.  

Of those I've looked at closely, I can see that one or more of the fundamental principles were not adopted and followed.

On the internet, you can know in weeks (even days and in some cases, in hours) if your idea and offer of a product or service will sell on the web.

There's no better or larger market for products and services than you will find on the internet.  You literally CAN sell to the entire world of people that have access to the internet.  And, the opportunity to create higher-than-normal returns are available,  especially if your offer is universal - that it has universal appeal (people around the world would benefit from it) and it's even better if your offer is also timeless - that it isn't time sensitive and five years from now, the same information is relevant.

EG:  Raising Children (Parenting), Improving Your Golf Game, Managing Business Expenses. 

So, let's look at some of the fundamentals of business marketing, in particular marketing a business on the internet.

 

Defining and Understanding a Market

Simplistically, there are just a few considerations here but they are really important.

Firstly, you MUST come to the realization that, regardless of your brilliant idea, innovation, invention, solution, etc., any person will only buy and keep what they want or need to buy.  In other words, the market you are targeting dictates what you can and will sell to them.  

You can position yourself to be found at every turn a potential customer takes and you can have really compelling, award winning sales copy.  However, you may not stand the test of time if you are trying to sell something to a marketplace of people who simply does not want and/or possibly already has in large supply.  

Creating and marketing a product or service according to market demand is actually a paradigm shift for many people.  If we model on the majority of conventional small business people, this is exactly what they FAIL TO DO.  Some spend their entire business life trying to figure that out and make it work.  

I did that for several years too, after following the model my parents laid out as I was growing up.  It near killed me emotionally and physically (and financially)

It could also be why many and the majority of inventors, although brilliant minds, end up broke - there wasn't a market demanding their 'wicky-wacky' gadget.  Of course, we need these people for humanity to move ahead and I'm very grateful we have people prepared to dedicate their life to this cause.  If you want to be one of them, then marketing a business on the internet may not be what you need right now.

Having said that, I HAVE moved in to markets, with a product or service in mind.  BUT I've gone through this methodical approach to ensure a high probability of making profit.  Where that's proven unlikely, I've dropped the idea and moved on before it's cost me any time and money.  And more often than not, making the time and head-space available has allowed a new and better opportunity to emerge rather than being congested and consumed with trying to make it work.  

So, before we even decide what your offer is going to be (what you will sell on the internet), we are going to discover what people are looking to buy.  By doing this, you might find yourself a marketplace wanting something you know nothing or very little about.  That's still an excellent business model because via the internet, you can pay an expert in a particular field to create a product for you, that you own and will sell.

And that's how most business people end up with empty pockets - after spending all the money on product creation and promotion.  Seems obvious, but most business people fail to invest in the market research first and on the internet, it's possible like never before - CHEAP AND FAST.  Seems crazy but most people fail to do this the right way."

Think about this ... 

What if you could invent the perfect set of customers?  Pretty cool notion huh?

What would that look like?  What are the key characteristics and indicators that would make them perfect for you?  

Would the perfect customer have money to spend?  

YES!  That's a good one and important, after all if they don't have money to spend, how are you going to build a profitable business?

Would the perfect customer have a VERY strong desire and need? 

YES!  An insatiable desire - so insatiable that they feel absolutely compelled to get every 'thing'.  What's on offer both today and what's new tomorrow.  

Take an enthusiast for example.  People that feel very strong about a hobby, interest or skill will want everything they can get their hands on and there's virtually no time taken to think about it - BANG, they jump in and grab it.  

Kind of like kids at a birthday party.  Put the desserts or treats out and watch the kids swarm around the table.  Or how about bike riders, golfers, pilots - they're all connoisseurs of their interest.  Serve it up and they'll gobble it up.

Also, a 'must-have' to sell business to business is ideal.  I've read about a woman who sells information to the oil industry on the internet - information about legal requirements.  For them, it's an absolute 'must-have' product and the companies literally fall over themselves to get this information, quickly!

Price is not an initial consideration and in some cases, it wouldn't matter what price something was - provided it wasn't too outrageous of course! 

Would the perfect customer be looking or shopping where you are selling?  

YES!  Well, this is the key - even with ticks on everything above, you have to know that your potential marketplace is actually using the world wide web to seek out information and buy products and services.  If they're not, you will not build a profitable online business - right?  Overlooking this consideration alone could cost you hundreds, even thousands of dollars and time.

1.   Passionate

2.   Irrational About Their Passion

3.   Have Money to Spend

4.   Proven REPEAT buyers [only]

5.   Insatiable (can't ever be satisfied)

6.   An addict for it

7.   Reachable

8.   Already Interested

9.   Already Motivated

10. Already Pre-Disposed to Buy

So, how do you find this out?  This is a subjective process although it's not TOO hard to figure out.  For example, don't target people or organizations with no money to spend or no desire to spend it.  

Targeting your offer to people that are not interested or motivated or don't have direct access to money - a credit card (such as say teens or a self-help community) will ensure you do not make a profit, even if your idea sounded good to you and your family and friends.  People that are passionate, irrational and addicted to an interest - a hobby or a sport or a business that has an absolute definite need for example, are willing to spend their disposable income and/or funds from an allocated budget.  

So, before we start thinking about what we want to sell and for how much and getting too far into the trap of "I can make a stack of money online with THIS idea", we are going to check out the market - who's looking, what their looking for and who's buying. And then you want to find out who's already selling, what they are selling, how many are selling and what kind of prices are being charged.

 

Researching a Market

First up, we want to find out if the market/s (the people who fit in the criteria above) actively use the internet.  

To do that we need to come up with what we think are the terms - the words and phrases they are using when they open up a search engine.

Take a moment to jot down some of the words and/or phrases (you only need to think of say two or three general ones for each market, at this stage).

Let's say you want to check out some statistics for golfers, you may think about the generic word/s and phrase/s such as "Golf" and "Golfing" or for horse riders "Horses" or for Fly Fishermen, "Fishing" and so on.  

When you have that short list, you're ready to actively start "checking this out".

Developing a Product for that Marketplace

So, you want to look at what to sell to this defined market.  That could be a digital information product, like a book or audio or audio-visual product or even software, that can be downloaded/delivered electronically on the internet.  Or perhaps, you will look at online sales of a 'hard' product, with offline delivery.

Either way, your next consideration is "How Do I Tailor Make My Product or Service?"

You've got many options that include:

   1.  Creating your own product - self-authoring

   2.  Creating your own product - paying someone else to make it for you with you retaining ownership

   3.  Using someone else's product and 're-selling' it such as under affiliation or resale/reprint license

   4.  Using someone else's product and branding it with your logo and details.
