 General Questions

This appears to be a very useful software. Why is it free?

Yes, we are aware of the fact that a lot of people will gladly pay for this. However we considered the fact that it relies on other websites to get its results and decided to make it a freeware.

We also develop commercial software that requires a payment. Please see the related products page for details.

You can distribute unlimited copies of the software from your own website or distribute them during a seminar, etc.

Can I offer this software as a download from my own site?

Yes, provided you do not modify the original ZIP file in anyway.

Do you offer a Mac version of Web Business Keywords?

We have received numerous queries regarding a Mac version and we might consider it some time in the future. However we will be able to do this only after some of our existing products are released and so we are unable to predict when this will happen.

 Keyword Questions

What does the "count" column in the Overture tab mean?

The "count" refers to the total number of searches for the keyword (phrase) during the previous month at Overture (and it's partner sites).

Why do I often get the message 'The Overture Search Tool site seems to be down, please try after some time' while using the Overture tab?

Web Business Keywords retrieves the Overture search terms by connecting to the Overture search suggestion tool. This unfortunately some times goes offline . You will have no choice but wait till get back online.

However Web Business Keywords caches the results. This means that if you have searched for a word before, you can retrieve the results without actually connecting to the net again.

Why don't you show the search counts with Teoma and Lycos?

The Lycos and Direct Hit suggestions don't include a search count. Use these engines to find related terms that may not really contain the original word.

The Overture tool tells me that it has no suggestions for the word I typed in. But when I search for that word in various search engines I get lots of results!

Overture simply collects the actual searches done by visitors who used Overture during the previous month. If GoTo says that it has no suggestions it simply means that not many people searched those words on Overture.

Also please remember that Overture is not the only search engine. The actual searches performed on Yahoo or Google will differ significantly and may be much higher.

 Site Popularity

How accurate is the site popularity feature?

The site popularity is measured using Alexa statistics. Alexa derives this information from the browsing patterns of its user base.

Alexa is a Windows tool and hence their user base will not include Mac and Unix/Linux users. So if your website is meant for non Windows users the site popularity measurement for your site will be highly inaccurate.

Also, your site popularity ranking will not be accurate if your user base falls under a category that is unlikely to use a tool like Alexa.

Otherwise Alexa will provide a fairly accurate idea about the comparative traffic to your site.

How frequently are the site ratings updated?

Alexa seems to update the site rankings every week. So you might want to recheck your rankings once a week.

Why are many of the Alexa ranks shown as "< 10000"?

Alexa ranks and visit counts are obtained by simply connecting to the Alexa® (Alexa.com) website and retrieving a web page from it. Recently Alexa stopped showing the ranks lower than 100,000 in their web based status page. We have updated Web Business Keywords because of the change. You will see "< 10000" displayed in "Rank" column for all domains that have a "lower than 100,000" Alexa rank. The Alexa visits (total number of accumulated visits from Alexa users during the past 6 months) are however displayed.

You will be able to see the actual ranks of sites ranked lower than 100,000 if you install Alexa in your system. If you are privacy conscious please make sure that you read Alexa's privacy statement before installing the plug-in.

Please do not confuse Alexa visits and ranks with any absolute numbers. Alexa statistics are generated based on visits from Alexa users (people who have installed the Alexa plug-in in their system) and are useful for comparative study only.

 Link Popularity

How do I improve my link popularity?

Here are some ways to increase your link popularity.

1. Request other sites with similar content for a link exchange.

2. Create good content that others will want to link to.

3. Having an exclusive software tool on your site is a great way to increase the number of links to your site.

4. Actively participate in popular discussion forums and use a signature that links to your site with the free download offer.

5. Write quality articles and allow other sites to freely publish them in return for a link.

 Search Engine Questions

Do you offer a search engine submission service?

IF you really want to pay someone else to do this for you, we recommend www.PrimeSiteSubmit.com. There are number of firms and individuals who offer these services.

I don't have the time to do web promotion. What are the ways of purchasing traffic?

Here are some of the options you have:

  • Hire some one else to do your search engine submission and optimization.
  • Use pay per click search engines like Google, Overture and others. Visit these sites for more details on pay click engines.
  • Start an affiliate program.
  • Purchase banner and ad spaces on other websites and newsletters.

Which are the major search engines?

Here is a list of the top search engines (not necessarily in any particular order)

  • Yahoo (www.yahoo.com)
  • Google (www.google.com)
  • Altavista (www.altavista.com)
  • Overture (www.overture.com)

I have a content rich site. Can I ignore all this search engine optimization stuff?

That depends on what your aims are. Ideally it is supposed to be enough if you create a good site with solid content, good meta tags plus title and a reasonably good keyword density.

Are the search engines the only way for your visitors to find you? If that is the case, you certainly have to make sure that you rank high on various search engines.

Pay Per Click Search Engines offer an easy way to get listed by simply bidding for a position. However this also requires some work because you will be competing with other sites to retain your rank.  Find out more at www.PerryMarshallExplains.com

Ultimately you need to make sure that your customer finds your site before he/she finds your competitor's site.
